Toray Industries Honored at the United Nations

The United Nations Association of New York (UNA-NY) hosted the 2008 Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner on October 23, 2008 to celebrate UN Day and honor the efforts of individuals and corporations seeking to combat global warming. This year's event was themed around “Climate Change—A Call for Action.” His Excellency Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, President of Iceland and Mr. Sadayuki Sakakibara, President of Toray Industries, Inc. were honored for their work to address the impact of global climate change. Among other effects, global warming exacerbates hurricanes, droughts, floods and other erratic weather patterns that dramatically increase political, economic and social tension. To learn more about the event, please visit the UNA-NY website.

Littlefield is extremely pleased to be a part of this wonderful event between the UNA-NY where we have volunteered our creative services and Toray, our major client for the past decade. We congratulate both UNA-NY and Toray.

MONOCHROME, by Paula Rice Jackson, to be published October 28th, 2008

Monochrome

After 2 years in preparation, Monochrome... by Paula Rice Jackson, a Littlefield "family member" for nearly two decades and its consultant for special projects, ....will be in bookstores soon.

We discovered her just before she became Editor in Chief of Interiors Magazine in 1984. (It was a trade magazine, published by Billboard, specialized in commercial interiors.) The book is a survey of both residential and commercial interiors that have been executed in just one color. Projects include work by Philippe Starck and Marcel Wanders in Europe and John Saladino, Vincente Wolf, and José Solis Betancourt in the US. The variety of houses, apartments, restaurants and a spa includes an apartment whose entire living room was upholstered in Granny Smith Apple Green Ultrasuede®. The color serves as a backdrop for an important art collection displaying "Op" and "Pop" art with works by Frank Stella, Ed Ruscha and others.

The book is published by The Monacelli Press which was recently acquired by Random House and is available at bookstores everywhere including Amazon. Littlefield designed the launch party invitation, party to be given at its showroom in NYC by the prestigious French crystal company Baccarat on November 6th, 2008.

We send our warm congratulations to Paula and know the book will be a great success.

Three Tenors + One More Tenor

Having accepted to design three CDs ALL at once for some of today's most prominent tenor saxophone artists, this April was a month for "Three Tenors" at Littlefield. The albums were "Just Between Friends" (HighNote, HCD-7188) by Houston Person with Ron Carter, "Gentle Storm" (HighNote HDC-7186) by Don Braden, and "Tenor Talk" (Savant SCD-2093) by Jerry Bergonzi.

In addition to working for these three living tenor giants, we were also thrilled to design the package for "John Coltrane Song Book" (HCD-7189), a compilation album by HighNote Records of this tenor legend's music, played by some of the label's top musicians including Frank Morgan, Larry Coryell, and Ceder Walton. The CD cover features an arresting image of Contrane on a bandstand captured by the photographer K. Abe sometime in the 1960s. Having been given the opportunity to design a Coltrane album cover is a dream-come-true event for this designer.

HighNote Records Honored at the 2008 "JazzWeek" Summit

HighNote Records, and it sister label, Savant Records, won the Label of the Year Award at the JazzWeek Summit that took place in Rochester, NY, June 19-21.

The label's executive producer, Joe Fields, was honored to accept the award. "We have only been doing what we've been doing since 1973—presenting great jazz artists and their music to their many fans and jazz lovers worldwide," said Fields.

In addition, the label received a second award for having the largest number of releases in the "top 10" on the JazzWeek Radio Chart between May 1, 2007 and April 30, 2008. The data that is used to make up the weekly chart is gathered electronically by Media-Guide from over 80 radio stations nationwide. The Jazz WeekAwards are voted on by the publication.

Littlefield congratulates Joe and Barney Fileds, the father-and-son team, Ray Osnato and the staff at HighNote. Littlefield has designed nearly 100 CDs for the label since 1999 and it's still going.

Mary Lou Williams "A Grand Night for Swinging" released

HighNote Records released a rare live recording from 1972 of the legendary jazz pianist and composer Marry Lou Williams (HCD-7180).

Featuring a beautiful and rare black-and-white portrait of Ms. Williams by K.Abe, a celebrated Japanese jazz photographer active since 1960s, the CD packaging was designed by Littlefield. Stating that she is "the only living musician that has played ALL the eras," Mary Lou Williams has advised throughout her illustrious career such greats as Marian McPartland. With Ronnie Boykins and the legendary drummer Roy Haynes, this CD of a live concert appearance in the mid-70s, is the only recording so far known to bring those two together.
